Texas SOS Walk-In — At a Glance
Is the Texas Walk-In Really Same-Day?
Yes — if you arrive and are processed before the counter closes. The Texas Secretary of State Apostille Desk issues apostilles while you wait, typically in 30–90 minutes depending on the day's volume. Documents submitted before noon on Monday or Friday are almost always completed the same day. Documents submitted after 2:00 PM are still usually processed same-day, but if volume is high you may be asked to wait until late afternoon.
There is no appointment system. You simply walk in during business hours on Monday or Friday. The Apostille Desk is on the ground floor of the Rudder Building.
This is the most commonly misunderstood fact about the Texas SOS apostille service. Many people drive to Austin on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday expecting walk-in service and find the apostille desk closed to walk-ins those days. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are mail-processing days only. Confirm you are going on a Monday or Friday before making the trip.
Location and Directions
The Texas Secretary of State apostille counter is located at:
1019 Brazos Street
Austin, TX 78701
The SOS Apostille Desk is on the ground floor, Room 105. Enter through the main Brazos Street entrance, pass through security, and the document services desk is immediately to your right.
Parking
Street parking on Brazos Street and nearby blocks is metered (ParkATX app or coins). Meters typically run 2-hour limits, which is sufficient for most apostille visits. Paid parking garages are available at:
- State Garage O (1601 Trinity St) — roughly 4 blocks away, $1.50/hour
- State Garage P (1400 San Jacinto Blvd) — 3 blocks, state employee priority but public spots available
- Republic Square Garage (422 Guadalupe St) — 5 blocks, higher rate but reliable availability
The Rudder Building is also accessible from the Congress Avenue CapMetro bus lines and is a short walk from the 6th Street Capital Metro stops.
Exactly What to Bring
Arriving prepared means you walk out with your apostille the same day. Missing any item may mean a return trip.
-
1
Your Original Document(s)
Bring the original certified document — not a photocopy. For birth or death certificates, this is the certified copy issued by Texas DSHS Vital Statistics with the state registrar's signature and seal. For notarized documents, it's the original with the notary's wet-ink signature and official seal. For court documents, it's the clerk-certified copy. Do not bring laminated originals — they cannot be processed.
-
2
Payment: $15 Per Document
The walk-in counter accepts credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover), debit cards, personal checks, cashier's checks, and money orders. No cash. If paying by check, make it payable to "Secretary of State." Bring the exact amount if possible — $15 per document, $30 for two, and so on.
-
3
The Destination Country
You will be asked what country the document is being used in. Know this before you arrive. The apostille certificate will list the destination country. You don't need a form — just be ready to state the country name verbally at the counter.
-
4
Your Photo ID
The Rudder Building has a security desk at the entrance that requires a valid government-issued photo ID to enter. A Texas driver's license, U.S. passport, or any other government ID works. You may be issued a visitor badge at the security desk.

5
A Folder or Document Sleeve for Each Document
Not required, but highly recommended. The apostille cover sheet is stapled or bound to your original document. Having a folder or sleeve for each apostilled document protects it for the drive home and subsequent submission. Documents that get folded, creased, or wet after apostilling cannot be replaced without restarting the entire process.
The Walk-In Counter Experience
When you arrive at the apostille desk, a staff member will review your documents to confirm they are eligible for apostille. Common reasons for same-day rejection at the counter:
- Document issued by another state (Texas SOS can only apostille Texas-issued documents)
- Document has been notarized when it shouldn't be (vital records)
- Notarized document has an expired notary commission (check the commission date on the notary seal)
- Court document is not clerk-certified (a simple printout is not sufficient)
- Laminated document
- Federal document (FBI background checks, U.S. DOS documents — these go to the federal apostille process)
If your document passes review, you'll pay the fee and receive a processing number. You can wait in the lobby or step out — the desk will call your number or ask you to check back in approximately 30–60 minutes.
Before you leave home, make color photocopies of every document you're taking for apostille. Once the apostille is attached, do not separate it from the original. Having a photocopy lets you reference the document content during your OCI, immigration, or consulate submission process without disturbing the apostille-original bond.
What If You Can't Get to Austin?
Walk-in service is only available in Austin. If driving to Austin isn't feasible, the Texas SOS accepts apostille requests by mail. Mail processing takes 10–15 business days (add transit time). Details:
- Mail to: Secretary of State, P.O. Box 13550, Austin, TX 78711
- Include: original document, cover letter with return address and destination country, check or money order for $15 per document, pre-addressed return envelope
- For overnight/FedEx: 1019 Brazos St, Austin, TX 78701 (physical address)

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The Texas SOS is closed on all Texas state holidays. Texas observes a substantial number of state holidays beyond standard federal holidays, including Confederates Heroes Day (Jan 19), Texas Independence Day (March 2), San Jacinto Day (April 21), and Emancipation Day (June 19, which is also a federal holiday). Before making the trip, check the Texas state holiday calendar at hr.texas.gov. If a Monday or Friday falls on a state holiday, the walk-in desk is closed that day.
Yes. The Texas SOS does not require the document owner to appear in person. A spouse, family member, paralegal, or courier can bring your documents to the walk-in counter. The only thing required is the original document, payment, and knowledge of the destination country. No notarized authorization from you is required for someone else to present your documents.
There is no stated limit on the number of documents you can bring for walk-in apostille in a single visit. Practically speaking, most walk-in visitors bring 1–5 documents. If you have a large batch (10+), it's courteous to call ahead at (512) 463-5701 and let the desk know. Large batches are still processed same-day but may require more processing time.
Arrive before 10:00 AM. Documents submitted by 10 AM are nearly always completed by noon. If your deadline is truly same-day (e.g., you need the apostille for a 3 PM consulate appointment), arriving at or before opening at 8:00 AM gives you the best chance. The desk processes documents in order of submission. Do not count on submitting after 2 PM and receiving the apostille the same day during busy periods.
The Texas SOS apostilles the signature and seal of the issuing authority — it does not review or translate the content of the document. Documents in foreign languages can be apostilled as long as they were issued or notarized by a Texas authority (Texas notary, Texas court, etc.). The apostille certificate itself is issued in English. If the destination country requires a translation, that is arranged separately after apostille.
